Application compatibility still appears to be an issue, check out the gallery below for some examples. The result is the same "1440 x 900"-like desktop you get under OS X. Update: As many of you have correctly pointed out, Windows allows you to specify custom DPI scaling modes including an integer 2.0 setting. With DPI scaling enabled under Windows 8, Metro looks like it would at 1440 x 900 - similar to the default setting for the Retina MacBook Pro under OS X. Metro supports integer DPI scaling at 1 and 2x factors, similar to OS X. Windows 8 does a somewhat better job, but only under Metro.

Note the Skyfall trailer is in a full 1080p window It’s passable in a pinch but suboptimal for certain. Some text elements will be huge and overflow outside of their normal borders, while others will ignore the scaling setting entirely and just be too small. While applications that aren’t Retina-aware under OS X tend to simply have blurry text, those that don’t behave properly with DPI scaling under Windows just look odd. Unfortunately as I mentioned in the Zenbook Prime review, Windows 7 and third party handling of DPI scaling is hardly elegant. The result is a desktop that looks like this:Īt the largest text scaling setting Windows is remarkably usable on the 15.4-inch display at 2880 x 1800.

Since the standard Windows desktop doesn’t support integer DPI scaling (see update below as you can force 2.0x scaling) Apple picked the next best option and configures Windows for 1.5x DPI scaling and 2880 x 1800 as the defaults.

Apple uses NVIDIA’s 296.49 drivers for the GeForce GT 650M under Windows. Apple relies on a lot of its own software to switch between processor and discrete graphics which obviously isn’t made available under Windows, thus you only get the dGPU. Like all previous MacBook Pro Boot Camp installs, only the discrete GPU is “connected” under Windows. You don’t have to do anything to make the Windows 8 RP work with the Boot Camp Assistant, just supply the Win 8 RP ISO instead of the Windows 7 image during the Boot Camp setup and you’re all set. The driver bundle and Boot Camp Assistant work with both Windows 7 and the Windows 8 Release Preview, although Apple only explicitly offers support for the former. Since then Apple has uploaded a Windows Support package to its servers, and the Boot Camp Assistant will give you drivers for everything in the machine should you ask for it. No amount of optimization will make up for that lack of hardware. When the MacBook Pro with Retina Display first started shipping Apple hadn’t even released Boot Camp drivers for the system.

Passable for 720p gaming, but woefully underpowered for a display with over 5x the pixel count. Comparing it to desktop parts, it would be roughly equivalent to a 9800 GTX/ GTS 250. A GT 650M is just way to weak to support that res natively in any modern 3d title. It's really not a matter of Windows vs MacOS. (This is not the case for any non-retina mac's) windows performance on a Retina will be lacking. Unfortunately, while you can get fantastic gaming performance if you were playing a properly optimized Mac game. Your best bet is to try playing with the resolution settings or lowering the graphics settings in SWTOR. This problem is made significantly worse in windows, especially when playing games under windows. The Macbook Pro Retina is a beautiful machine but it also has a very high resolution which pushes the graphics card more than any other computer will for basic things. Your problem is you are running a retina computer on windows.
#WINDOWS 7 ON MACBOOK PRO RETINA MAC OS#
A Mac can play games just as well (if not better under the Mac OS if the dev supports it) as a windows computer. Ok, All those saying macs are not built for gaming go away. You're hanging around with the wrong crowd, bro. () You'll likely find a better response in the CS forums. I found the problem.you didn't go with PC! :D Please help, I know im probably doing something wrong. So whats the problem with mine? I went to device manager to see if I needed to update my drivers, but they all say that "windows determined you have the best driver installed". Heck ive even seen people play it flawlessly on their MacBook Pro Retinas. I have gone to websites that determine if I can run the game, and all of them say that I should run it perfectly. And im disappointed because the only way I can play without lag is if I play with everything at the lowest settings. I immediately installed SWTOR(I have installed nothing else). So I used Bootcamp and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Before I get any hate comments, just help me with my problem FIRST. Ok so let me start off by saying that I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina 15".
